Make your own kit for predicting foaling (milk test kit)

Has the price of using the Predict A Foal kits kept you from testing your mare's milk to predict foaling? Well, here is the way to make your own kit! Read on.

Save a bunch of money by using Swimming Pool Water Quality Test Strips to check your mares' milk to predict foaling.

The brand is AquaChek® 5-in-1 Water Quality Test Strips. They make many types of test strips so make sure it is AquaChek® 5-in-1. Fifty test strips are in a bottle, so check your expiration date to see how long they will last before they get too old (you will know because they will discolor)

Directions:

You MUST use distilled water, because tap water or regular bottled water will NOT give accurate results.

Take 1/2 cc of mare's milk/liquid you milk out of the mare into a small container that you have washed out with the distilled water and thoroughly dried. Then add 3 cc of distilled water in with the milk liquid. (Original directions call for 1 cc of mare's milk and 6 cc of water, but it is much easier to get 1/2 cc, so do it either way) Shake the syringe gently to mix both liquids. Take out a test strip. You will only use one color sequence on the bottle, the one for total hardness (as CaCO3) grains per gallon. This is the color sequence that starts dark green and ends up very orangey rust colored. Dip the test strip into the milk mixture and wait 1 minute to check the color. Then match it to the chart on the bottle for total hardness.

The COLOR CODE CHART for foaling:
Green square, no need to worry at all (don't count this green as block one)
One to two blocks change, still a ways off.
Brown, 3 changes of square color, you probably have 3 or 4 days still to wait
4 changes, keep a good watch as you are about 24 -48 hrs away from foaling.
Rust, all 5 changes, put on the coffee pot and get ready with your foaling kit and everything in order.

Extra Test:

Use the same milk/distilled water solution to test the pH level of the mare's milk. Use a new 5-in-1 strip for this test. Immerse the strip into the fluid as above to completely cover all of the indicator bands. This test can be read more or less immediately.

The general trend is that a mare's milk will test above pH 7 for a period of time before foaling and as she approaches foaling the pH level will drop. When the milk is pH 7.0 or below she is getting close to foaling.

When combining the results of the Calcium and pH tests they give you another indicator as to the mare's readiness to foal.
